The Biscuit Rollers “COUNTRY- BLUES AND JAZZ FROM THE 20's - 30's" and beyond!
After a brief pause in their saga, the often imitated but never equaled BISCUIT ROLLERS are born again in Austin, Texas with a new line-up formed by the original band leader, fingerpicking guitar master and composer, Thierry Cognee,
The Biscuit Rollers music includes Country-blues tunes from great artists such as: Blind Boy Fuller, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis, Elmore James and more.... along with jazz standards, old-time spirituals and rocking urban blues. All presented with a rare quality of musicianship and authenticity.
The Biscuit Rollers history includes most all the better venues in Austin including; Waterloo Ice House, Saxon Pub, Blues Cafe, Freddies Place, Ruta Maya, Central Market, Stubbs, Threadgill's, etc.. They’ve appeared on the Texas Music Café on PBS Television, were featured on the first live KGSR broadcast of “Live From The Iron Catus” and of course held forth at numerous corporate and private events.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well what must a picture and a live performance be worth? See and hear "Why Don't You Quit Your Low Down Ways" from THE BISCUIT ROLLERS video, "THE BACK PORCH TAPES".
The Line-up:
Thierry Cognee - Guitar: Guitarist extraordinaire, Thierry is a scholar of blues and jazz in the French tradition of true study of American roots music. With his big hollow body guitar and vintage amplifier, Thierry has performed his particular brand of country blues throughout the US and Europe, from coffee houses to theaters. Thierry is the founder of the Biscuit Rollers.
Megan Bloebaum - Vocals: A powerful singer and talented songwriter, Megan has been performing for more than 10 years. Megan is nothing if not versatile, Megan has sang blues, jazz, country and soul. Holding a Masters Degree in Opera, Megan is currently teaching young kids how to sing at Austin Lyric Opera and she also performs non-traditional musical theater. Her training and experience in theatre combined with her passion to “..belt her guts out and rouse the crowd” guarantees a show not to be missed
Steve Power - Harmonica: Steve Power has been a harmonica player since 1966 when his drum kit was launched out the front door by an irate parent. Since then Steve has played harp with John Lee Hooker, Jesse “Guitar” Taylor, David Booker, Mike Harries Ted Oberg, Bobby Henry, Cal Newman, Erin Sax and a host of others. Steve founded Sting Like a Bee, by consensus the best Welsh/American rhythm and blues band ever. He was voted Rhondda Valley Musician of the Year and he has even received accolades from Elwood Blues. Just ask Dan!. His “Mississippi sex-o-phone” has also been featured on several film and video soundtracks. Steve is the real deal having played across the US and Europe, from strip clubs and brothels to football stadiums. Steve Power plays Seydel harmonicas exclusively
Ricky Rees -Upright Bass: Little is known of Louisiana native Ricky Rees except that he has never been photographed in the wild and that he is one of the finest upright bass players in Austin, Texas. Hell, the man has played the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.. Combining elements of Western Swing, West Coast Jump blues, Delta blues and rockabilly like it was mixed together by Willie Dixon, Ricky puts together outstanding musicianship with crazy energy. We just wonder what that doghouse bass ever did to him?
